Good morning, Eugene. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 21st of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local organizations are asking for more volunteers and donations to help serve meals for Thanksgiving — Neighbors Feeding Neighbors is under high demand while Burrito Brigade and First Baptist Church report having enough help. PeaceHealth has planned its turkey basket giveaway a year in advance to secure the needed supplies.  KEZI
  • NBC16 KMTR is running a toy drive that partners with Les Schwab and the Salvation Army to collect unwrapped gifts and cash donations from Les Schwab locations across Lane County until December 15 — the drive will help brighten the holidays for children in need.  NBC 16

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Teagan Merritt, a 16-year-old, was severely injured in a car accident over the weekend when her vehicle was rear-ended by a truck and sent into a creek—she remains in the ICU with a shattered jaw, broken ribs, and other injuries while her family faces a lengthy recovery and uncertain future.  KEZI

CRIME NEWS

  • Lane County Search and Rescue volunteers and agency partners found the body of 76-year-old Jean Fritz Pierre Louis in the Salmon Creek area on November 19 — the search began in October when he was reported missing.  KEZI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lane County schools can now sign up for the 2026 Electronics Recycling Competition (registration is open until Dec. 12) as they aim to win up to $500 in grants, a gift certificate and a special recognition award by recycling the most e-waste. The contest will run from Jan. 6 to April 24.  KEZI
  • The Crow-Applegate-Lorane School District near Eugene reduced chronic absenteeism by lowering class sizes and switching to a four-day week schedule — cutting absentee rates from 44% to 15.2% while offering free breakfast and lunch to most students. Superintendent Heidi Brown said that closer teacher-student bonds have helped families better manage appointments and daily routines.  KLCC
  • On November 20, the Oregon Department of Education released the At A Glance School and District Profiles for the 2024 to 25 school year to compare attendance, test scores, and graduation rates; the profiles reported the highest 9th grade on track to graduate rate and improved scores in 3rd grade ELA and 8th grade math. The updated online report card now features a new dial design — families can review key metrics for schools and districts statewide.  NBC 16

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Oregon Department of Transportation said that the full closure of OR 126B Westbound Main Street Bridge for repairs and bike ramp installation has been postponed from December 1 to early January. During the closure, traffic will be rerouted to the South A Street Bridge — detours and a new traffic pattern will keep drivers safe.  KEZI
  • Lane County received only $7.6M of the over $11M needed for FY26, which means 60 state-funded shelter beds will be lost and three shelter programs will no longer receive state funding. In Eugene, the Sandbox Shelter — losing 6 beds and about 10 staff positions — and the Egan Warming Shelter — which will see its funding cut by 50% — may face more cuts if funding does not increase.  KEZI
  • Lane County and Eugene are set to lose about 60 homeless shelter beds because funding is $4 million short and The Sandbox shelter in Eugene may close without a new private donation before the end of November. Officials warn that fewer services and job cuts will hit local programs this winter — urging community members to support local shelter providers.  KLCC
