COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City Club of Eugene aired a program Monday, Dec. 15 at 7:00 p.m. on KLCC 89.7 FM that featured community leaders discussing the future of the Lane County Fairgrounds & the ongoing master planning process for the historic site.  KLCC
  • On Monday, Dec. 15, members of the Jewish community gathered at the Valley River Center to light a Hanukkah candle after learning of the Bondi Beach terrorist attack. Eugene mayor Kaarin Knudson, faith leaders, and law enforcement (including K9 units) attended the celebration while urging safety measures for future events.  KLCC

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Eastbound lanes on OR 58 are closed nine miles east of McCredie Springs at milepost 54 because recovery efforts continue, causing delays.  NBC 16

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hunter Communications, a Medford-based fiber optic provider that serves communities such as Eugene, was acquired by Oak Hill, a middle-market private equity firm, on Dec. 15. The CEO said the sale will not slow expansion plans or community initiatives (including discounted internet for educators and local programs).  KLCC
  • Some Eugene dispensaries are not thrilled as the DEA could soon reclassify cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III, which may allow them to deduct operating expenses but also bring added federal oversight — they say full federal legalization would be more beneficial.  NBC 16

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A University of Oregon biology professor (recently retired) devised a method counting baby crabs to predict Dungeness crab catch four years later; his forecast is 15,247,000 pounds even as marine heat waves can skew results, and the crab season opens today from Cape Falcon to the California border.  KLCC
  • Gas prices in Eugene dropped 24 cents per gallon over the past week to $3.20, and the cheapest station was $2.89 yesterday. Analyst Patrick De Haan expects the downward trend to continue as increased refinery output pushes prices lower later in 2025.  NBC 16

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents and union members rallied Monday evening in Bethel School District to ask for fair teacher contracts as they pointed to growing class sizes and fewer support staff; they also raised concerns over the recent closure of Shasta Middle School (after Clear Lake Elementary closed last year).  KVAL
  • Monday, Dec. 15, Lane Community College evacuated its downtown campus after a possible gas leak scare; emergency crews later determined the alarm was due to a foul odor resembling rotten trash.  KVAL
  • Fourteen student teams gathered at Cal Young Middle School (Dec. 13) for the inaugural LEGO League Robotics Tournament, showcasing local talent in engineering, coding, and teamwork. Winners received LEGO trophies in a competition that celebrated innovation and creative problem-solving.  KEZI
