About this event

The Oregon Humanities Center hosts weekly Work-in-Progress Talks to showcase the humanities research of its many fellows. This week, Leah Lowthorp presents her research on "Hashtag Storytelling and CRISPR Gene Editing: Biotechnological Humor, Anxiety, and Hope Online."

Lowthorp's project takes an ethnographic approach to the study of online storytelling about human genetic modification, exploring the impact of an emerging genetic technology on the lives of everyday people. Analyzing social media narratives and memes related to the CRISPR gene-editing tool, it offers a window onto the spectrum of public engagement with this biotechnology while contextualizing these narratives within larger scientific, policy, and social justice-oriented ethical and biopolitical landscapes.

Join us for this Work-in-Progress Talk in the OHC Conference Room (Prince Lucien Campbell Hall 159) at noon on Fridays. These events are free and open to the public. Please register for this event online at ohc.uoregon.edu.
