A University of Oregon study shows teens who catch up on sleep during the weekend have a 41% lower risk of depression (as noted by Sleep Lab director Melynda Casement) than those who do not.
Researchers recommend eight to 10 hours of sleep to improve mental health.
Lane County health officials warn that a 61 percent drop in flu vaccinations could lead to major outbreaks as a new H3N2 strain spreads and leaves children, seniors and immunocompromised residents at risk.
They expect peak flu activity around Jan. 20 and urge residents to get vaccinated.
