COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Egan Warming Centers in Lane County have sheltered residents for eight days of below-freezing weather while operating fewer sites and serving more people. Director Bill Barnard says the centers urgently need more volunteers+ community members can visit the Saint Vincent de Paul website to help.  KEZI

ECONOMY NEWS

  • During a cold snap, Eugene power demand reached 453 megawatts on Thursday morning when temperatures were around 20 degrees. EWEB urged residents to conserve energy by lowering thermostats and reviewing available insulation and heating rebate programs.  KLCC
  • Oregon’s unemployment rate remained flat at 5.2% in December as the state lost 2,200 jobs (with significant losses in retail trade, transportation and warehousing, and construction) compared to seasonal norms, according to the Oregon Employment Department; expert Gail Krumenauer explained the leveling off after steady monthly increases in 2025.  KLCC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lane 4-H and OSU Extension will offer Adulting 101 classes for teens starting Feb. 9 at the OSU Extension Service building (996 Jefferson St) to teach skills like budgeting, car basics, and first aid; registration is limited and costs $75.  KLCC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lane County Clerk’s Office is offering 32 30-minute Valentine’s Day marriage ceremony slots on Saturday, Feb. 14, with fees of $60 for a marriage license and $117 for the ceremony. Couples must get a valid license at least three days before the event (renewals do not need one).  KLCC
