COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Project Sanitation Justice Eugene launched in January and is now mapping public restrooms in downtown Eugene at locations like Alton Baker Park and the University District to record cleanliness + safety, ADA access, and supply levels. Community volunteers are needed to support improvements in public health and sanitation equity.  KVAL

CULTURE NEWS

  • In Creswell, Oregon, Barbara Heyman accepted the Legion of Honor Medal on behalf of her late husband, Col. Richard 'Dick' Heyman, during a ceremony on February 23 — the event celebrated his service from World War II to later conflicts — as local community members honored his enduring legacy.  NBC 16
  • Ballet Fantastique celebrates its 25th anniversary with a world premiere of The Little Mermaid 80s-pop Ballet live today at the Silva Concert Hall, featuring 16 professionals and 55 students as co-choreographer Hannah Bontrager leads the performance.  KLCC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eugene Springfield Fire will host its 15th Young Women’s Fire Camp from June 22–26, and applications open Sunday, March 1 through May 1 for 16 female-identifying youth aged 16–19 to build firefighting skills and teamwork.  KVAL
  • Lane Community College and its faculty union reached a tentative four-year contract after 11 months of talks that include cost-of-living adjustments and job protections for both full and part-time faculty. Union members will vote on the deal while the Board of Education prepares for approval next month (ratification pending).  KLCC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Eugene voters will decide on May ballot whether to increase the public library levy from 15 cents to 19 cents per $1,000 of property value. The extra funds (averaging $54 per home yearly) will support early childhood education, remote kiosks, and additional library staffing.  KVAL
  • On Friday, Feb. 27, an Oregon jury ordered PacifiCorp to pay $305 million to 16 wildfire victims in the Santiam Canyon fire. The verdict builds on over $1 billion in previous awards while the utility appeals the decision and more trials are set for 2026 and 2027.  NBC 16

HEALTH NEWS

  • Oregon lawmakers passed a bill today that will require insurers and state benefit boards to cover cervical cancer screenings and follow-up exams without cost-sharing. The measure heads to the governor's desk to remove financial barriers to care.  KVAL
