COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Weyerhaeuser announced its Giving Fund awarded $120,500 in grants to 25 nonprofits in Eugene and Cottage Grove for workforce, education and community projects. Eligible organizations must apply for the 2026 cycle by Sept. 30.  NBC 16
  • The owners of Tsunami Books in south Eugene are asking local supporters to help raise $200,000 to purchase the building and 10,000 sqft lot on Willamette Street, aiming to close the deal by Nov. 1. The store has been a community hub for books and gatherings since 1995.  KEZI

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Eugene Emergency Physicians filed suit against PeaceHealth, ApolloMD and others, claiming their contract ended unfairly because of hospital bed and nurse shortages. The suit seeks clarity on obligations and a pause to changes at PeaceHealth Riverbend as it plans emergency department redesign with new bed capacity (including a rehab center).  NBC 16

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Oregon rose to $4.87 a gallon for regular this week amid global disruptions (including supply issues in the Middle East) and seasonal factors, causing prices to climb about $1 per gallon since the Iran conflict began on Feb. 28. The national average increased by 19 cents to $3.98 a gallon (from Feb. 28 levels).  KLCC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Autzen Canoe Canal Footbridge will reopen for walking and biking on March 30 as UO upgrades its athletics practice facilities. It will remain open for 8 to 10 weeks (awaiting a new girder) before a final closure for ongoing construction.  KEZI
  • Dr. Stephanie Bulger, President of Lane Community College in Eugene, was selected as one of 23 community college presidents to join the Aspen Presidents Fellowship (supported by JPMorganChase). She will work with peers to develop a reform agenda that boosts student success and workforce readiness.  NBC 16
