- ➤ HIV Alliance, SquareOne Villages and the City of Eugene announced a partnership to open a new safe sleep site called Rainbow Corner on City property to serve individuals receiving HIV services and experiencing homelessness. The six-unit site—built with privately donated funds and managed by Taylor Christianson—featured pallet shelters, a community space, a kitchen and shower/restroom facilities and acted as a bridge to affordable housing. - ➤ Eugene police arrested Levi Rosenthal Eva, 18, on April 16 in connection with a March 3 murder and shooting incident near east 23rd Avenue and Willamette Street— Eva faces charges of first- and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, first-degree robbery and unlawful use of a weapon as detectives continue their investigation. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lawmakers introduced House Bill 2006 to limit the number of bills in long legislative sessions — restricting legislators to 25 proposals and assigning set limits for committees, the governor, agencies and statewide officials. The measure comes after more than 3,200 bills were proposed this session and aims to improve policy review and transparency. KLCC
- ➤ Lane County is moving forward with the $150 million CleanLane Resource Recovery Facility to capture 90% of methane and divert 80,000 tons of waste each year from Short Mountain Landfill, with the facility planned to open in 2026. Sanipac and EcoSort have cut their shipments—reducing tipping fee revenue by $4 million annually—and now send trash to Dry Creek Landfill, raising concerns that county officials may need to adjust fees or delay the project. - ➤ CAHOOTS union members and former employees in Eugene are planning new ways to keep the decades-old crisis response service running after the city ended its contract—White Bird Clinic said it lacks funds to provide full mobile crisis care after nearly 17,000 calls were handled last year. Community members will decide if Eugene can still deliver adequate mental health care without CAHOOTS. KVAL
- ➤ At a city council meeting in Eugene, 18-year-old Victoria Acosta explained that closing the CAHOOTS program took away a vital support that once helped her in hard times — she fears many young people may now miss out on needed help.
