COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Emerald Kidsports and Eugene Civic Alliance reached a $48M goal for Civic Park when Sierra Pacific Foundation donated the final $700K plus hundreds of donors supported the project; a Play On, Celebrate Civic Park Event is set for June 5 to thank contributors.  KEZI

CULTURE NEWS

  • KLCC invites local listeners to a party celebrating community sound on Wednesday, May 13 (4-7pm) at Farmers Market Pavilion and Plaza. Guests will enjoy live music, games, and food trucks at this free event.  KLCC
  • Local composer and retired scientist Anice Thigpen premieres her new musical 'WaterWorks' — a production blending opera-style singing and theater to explore climate change — Friday, May 1 at Lane Community College's Ragozzino Performance Hall, running through May 3 with sliding-scale tickets that support the McKenzie River Trust.  KLCC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lane Community College cut its Health Information Management and Criminal Justice programs to address a $4 million shortfall after its board approved the measure Wednesday — officials set up a teach-out agreement with Klamath Community College though faculty said the transition may disrupt local students.  KEZI
  • Twin Rivers Charter School students took part in a 24-hour Weed-a-Thon at Logjam State Park on Friday starting at 9 a.m. They cleared invasive species (Scotch broom and Himalayan blackberry) to help restore native plants.  KEZI

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nearly 7,000 nurses, healthcare workers and community members signed a petition on Wednesday asking PeaceHealth to renew its contract with Eugene Emergency Physicians and hold off on switching to Apollo MD (to allow time for further review).  KEZI
  • PeaceHealth installed four outdoor defibrillator Save Stations at sports fields in Springfield and West Eugene to boost public safety today. The first unit went up at Willamalane Sports Complex, with others placed at Hamlin Middle School, Lane Community College, and Babe Ruth Sport Complex (all are unlocked, monitored, and climate-controlled).  KEZI

SPORTS NEWS

  • Eugene Marathon weekend features races for adults and kids, with the 5K starting Saturday at 8 a.m. outside Hayward Field and the Kids Duck Dash (at 9:30 a.m. for ages 2-12) nearby, while a marathon and half marathon are set for Sunday at 7 a.m.  KVAL
  • Hayward Field has been a home for track legends and local runners for over 100 years, with Hayward Hall displaying trophies, archives & original writings from Bill Bowerman. The Eugene Marathon shows how TrackTown USA continues to inspire the community today.  NBC 16
