- ➤ Eugene community members remember Sharon Schuman, who died days ago in a vehicle-pedestrian crash, for her long-time work as a volunteer violin teacher and affordable housing board member—her son and colleagues recalled her passion as police continue to investigate. KEZI
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ After more than 200 days on strike (since last September), Bigfoot Beverages said it would keep replacement workers instead of rehiring picketers. The union declared a lockout (claiming the decision was illegal) and Teamsters representatives promised to file further charges over the labor dispute. KLCC
- ➤ Hodgepodge, a new bookstore and taphouse combining books and beer, is opening today in a remodeled law office near the University of Oregon campus. Owners Sophie and Stuart Raymond offer international literature, local beers on tap, a small cocktail menu and savory pies—making a space for everyone. KLCC
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Eugene police arrested a 61 year old man, Thomas Randolph Logan, at about 3:50 p.m. on April 24 for allegedly stripping wire from a telephone pole near Bertelsen Road and Stewart Road—causing the pole to catch fire, cutting CenturyLink cables into pieces and leading to an estimated $10,000 in damages as he now faces charges of arson and criminal mischief. - ➤ Lane County deputies responded just after 11 a.m. on April 25 after local residents reported a body found at Gates Cemetery south of Crow — detectives are still investigating while the deceased person's identity is being withheld. KEZI
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Eugene 4J School District has proposed a budget for the next school year that cuts family resource coordinator positions in four schools, and parents worry this will reduce crucial support for vulnerable students. The budget committee will review six proposals on April 29 and the board will decide on May 21—moves meant to handle enrollment drops. KVAL
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ During KLCC’s Spring Membership Drive in April, over 100 members chose to have trees planted on their behalf through the National Forest Foundation’s Sapling Program—954 saplings will be planted to help reforest the Umpqua National Forest. KLCC plans to support forest recovery as part of ongoing reforestation efforts in fire-affected areas. KLCC
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ KLCC is watching federal moves that may cut funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting—roughly 10% of its operating budget—and hurt local news and cultural programs. The rescission memo will be presented on April 28, and budget talks in May could lead to further cuts if approved. KLCC
- ➤ City Manager Sarah Medary will present the new 2025-2027 Amended Proposed Budget to the Eugene Budget Committee on April 30 at 5:30 p.m.—the document, available now on the City website, addresses an $11.5 million annual gap with most General Fund cuts starting in July while keeping recreation open until September 30.
