COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eugene Makerspace reopened at a new location Saturday after a fire in 2024 forced its closure. The workshop now offers dedicated spaces for fiber arts (and electronics, woodworking, and laser cutting) to support local makers.  KEZI

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Eugene have jumped nearly 19 cents in the past week to average $5.14 per gallon at 78 stations, according to GasBuddy’s survey — prices are up $1.41 from a year ago and 24.6 cents higher than last month.  KVAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Opponents of the Lane County Watersheds Bill of Rights initiative raised about $313,000 (roughly 10 times more than supporters) as of Monday ahead of the May 19 ballot when voters decide on protecting local ecosystems.  KLCC

HEALTH NEWS

  • University of Oregon hosted the Out of the Darkness Campus Walk today to raise over $15K for suicide prevention & community support, drawing over 300 participants who explored vendor booths and an honor bead tent to remember loved ones.  KEZI
  • Pediatrician Dr. Pilar Bradshaw warns that children three years and younger are at high risk for choking and advises parents to cut food into pieces and keep eating areas safe. CPR classes (such as those by the American Red Cross locally) can teach proper response to a choking emergency.  NBC 16
  • Sarah Vail, a mother and advocate with APALD, held a gathering outside the Eugene Federal Building Saturday to raise awareness about fentanyl risks. The event aimed to spark parent conversations + support future legislative actions to address the synthetic drug crisis.  KEZI
  • On Monday, May 4, a US District Judge questioned PeaceHealth's plan to replace Eugene Emergency Physicians with ApolloMD for Lane County emergency departments, noting a handshake deal does not meet state law. CMO Dr. Kim Ruscher warned tensions may hinder staffing as new contracts begin (June 1, July 1).  KVAL
