  • Valley River Center and the Junior League of Eugene will host Operation Big Wheels (a Touch A Truck event) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 16 in their northwest parking lot near the DMV where kids can explore trucks up close.  NBC 16

CULTURE NEWS

  • At Tsunami Books, local musician Paul Safar led a Beatles sing-along on May 7 that brought the community together. The event is part of a series timed with the Eugene Concert Choir’s Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Oratorio concert later this month (the annual sing-along typically happens the first Thursday in January).  KLCC
  • Paul McCartney’s 'Liverpool Oratorio' will be performed on Sunday, May 17 at 2:30 p.m. at the Hult Center by the Eugene Concert Choir and Orchestra featuring four guest soloists and the All-American Boys Chorus of Santa Ana, offering a rare opportunity to hear this unique classical work in Eugene.  KLCC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Oregon President Karl Scholz announced that the school will need to cut about $65M from its budget to avoid a future deficit and has imposed an immediate hiring and pay freeze while planning improvements in research and student experience. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lane County earned the title of Oregon’s healthiest employer in its size category for the sixth year, according to the Portland Business Journal.  KEZI
  • Starting June 1, Oregon SNAP applicants and renewers will be required to complete interviews before receiving food assistance — a process that returns to standard federal rules after temporary pandemic flexibilities ended May 31. Affected households should update contact details as they await scheduling.  NBC 16

HEALTH NEWS

  • Thrive 360 will host a free two-day Community Wellness Expo on May 16-17 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Eugene, where local experts, vendors, and keynote speakers will share health resources (supporting the Lane Senior Support Coalition).  NBC 16
  • PeaceHealth announced on Thursday that Jim McGovern is no longer the chief executive for its Oregon region while Heather Wall continues as interim leader to maintain stable operations + begin recruiting a permanent CEO.  KVAL
  • A preliminary settlement ended PeaceHealth’s plan to replace Eugene Emergency Physicians with ApolloMD after legal and community challenges, and on May 14 the system relieved Dr. Jim McGovern from his role as chief executive for the region. The court will continue hearing the case in Oregon.  KLCC
