ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Firefighters from Eugene Springfield Fire responded before 4:00 a.m. May 28 near Dorris Ranch to a house fire on the 600 block of Dorris Street—no occupants were injured. NBC 16
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ E.J. Rotherham, assistant principal at Agnes Stewart Middle School, died suddenly last weekend, and his loss has deeply affected the Springfield School District. He had helped shape the school since 1998—extra support including counselors and therapy dogs was provided for students and staff. KEZI
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Federal and local officials warned that the Willamette Valley is at risk for a dangerous wildfire season because of high heat, dry weather, and fewer weather balloons—budget cuts have reduced key weather data. Senator Ron Wyden, Representative Val Hoyle, and Lane County Commissioner Heather Buch said residents should prepare by creating safe spaces around their homes and using prescribed burns as fire season 2025 nears. - ➤ Today the Eugene Human Rights Commission is accepting nominations for its 2024 Leadership Awards to honor community leaders who champion human rights. Nominees can be submitted online until 5 p.m. on June 12 and winners will be announced on June 22 in the Downtown Library's Bascom-Tykeson Room. City of Eugene
- ➤ City workers in Eugene have been giving unhoused campers only two hours' notice before clearing tents — a practice that goes against a state law requiring 72 hours' notice. Four unhoused residents sued the city, and a judge later ruled that loopholes allow rapid removals to continue while some dropped plaintiffs now face legal fees as the case is under appeal. - ➤ Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek reversed her office’s decision and will support the extradition of Elisha Young—Eugene Weekly’s former bookkeeper charged with multiple theft counts after her arrest in Ohio. The decision follows community protest and criticism of the initial denial, and Young must be arrested again so she can face the charges. Eugene Weekly
- ➤ Oregon Senate passed a bill that will ban plastic film bags at checkout in restaurants, grocery stores, and other retail spots. The measure passed 22—8 and now awaits Governor Kotek’s approval. NBC 16
- ➤ The Urban Renewal Agency of the City of Eugene is seeking a partner to redevelop the vacant North Butterfly Lot—a ½-acre site next to the new Farmers Market Pavilion that currently serves as a temporary parking lot—in order to add urban housing to downtown; responses to the RFQ are due by July 31.
