Good morning, Eugene. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 6th of June.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On June 5th just after 5 p.m., firefighters from Eugene Springfield Fire fought an active house fire in the 500 block of S 5th Street in Springfield where residents safely evacuated and a full alarm assignment brought the fire under control — motorists are asked to avoid the area until work is finished.  KVAL

CRIME NEWS

  • Kenneth Dell Laster, 72, who has undiagnosed dementia and a heart condition, was last seen at his west Eugene home at 5 a.m. on June 4 and later near the Space Age gas station at 8 a.m.—Eugene PD asks anyone who sees him to call for help.  NBC 16

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eugene Public Library invites everyone to join its free Summer Reading program from June 1 to Aug.31 at the Downtown, Bethel, and Sheldon Branches — kids and grown-ups can choose a free book and join events like a Teddy Bear Picnic on July 19, a Teen and Tween Comic-Con on Aug.8, and an author talk on Aug.9 — to keep reading fun during summer break.  City of Eugene
  • Lane Community College paused its licensed practical nurse program — which denied 37 applications including that from certified nursing assistant Sarah Yarck — as the school reviewed its health offerings. It is now accepting applications for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program — available since June 5 — set to begin this fall to support registered nurses in advancing their careers.  KVAL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fire season will begin on June 9 for lands managed by the Oregon Department of Forestry in the South Cascade and Western Lane District. The department said a moderate fire danger level will bring restrictions on debris burning, spark-emitting equipment, and smoking in operational areas — measures prompted by declining spring rains and rising temperatures.  KEZI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Since June 4, the City of Eugene has begun the Broadway Sidewalks and Paving Project—part of a two-phase plan to widen sidewalks, add street trees, and reallocate a driving lane for safer travel along Mill Street/Broadway from Hilyard to Alder. Phase two will start later this year with more extensive paving work expected to finish by November, and the project is funded through a voter-approved pavement bond and the Riverfront Urban Renewal District.  City of Eugene
