ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On July 9, a mobile home at the Santiago Mobile Home Estates (near 53rd and Main) in Springfield caught fire and left one person dead with another in hospital as firefighters and the Oregon State Fire Marshal's Office investigate the potentially suspicious cause.  KEZI
  • A driver was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon at about 3:35 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 105 when his pickup truck rolled onto its side and burst into flames, and he was taken to a local hospital—officials said the Oregon Department of Transportation later moved the vehicle to clear the road.  KEZI

  • Cottage Grove police said that Fernando G. Rodas Martin, released from jail with an ankle monitor, removed his device around 1:50 a.m.—reportedly assaulting a woman who said she had no money and injuring her head and face—before fleeing near E. Madison and being captured by officers with K9 Ripp.  KVAL

CULTURE NEWS

  • City Cultural Services is inviting local artists to submit spooky installation ideas for Halloween Downtown by Aug. 25 and will hold an info session at 5:30 p.m. July 31 at Whirled Pies—approved artists will set up their projects on Oct. 25 and visitors will vote for their favorites, with winners receiving the Candy Corn Crown and Candy Corn Scepter and leading the 2026 pet parade.  City of Eugene

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new industrial park began its construction Wednesday at Westgate Industrial Park on Danebo Avenue with $500,000 from Business Oregon supporting the project—23 lots ranging from 1.3 to 50 acres are planned. The development will take three years to complete and is expected to bring job growth and enhanced security—fostering local innovation.  KEZI

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new HIV prevention injection called Lenacapavir, approved by the FDA last month, will protect people for six months with just two shots a year. The drug has shown a 96% effectiveness rate in trials — though its high cost of about $14,000 per dose has spurred efforts to secure insurance coverage and expand access to low-income areas.  KVAL

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In September 2022, Eugene police warned residents about phantom rental scams after reports of fake listings that tricked renters into paying deposits and first month’s rent. The department advises renters to tour apartments before signing and to verify listings on official property websites—this approach may help prevent further fraud.  KVAL
