Good morning, Eugene. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 12th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • South Eugene residents are asking the city to close the eight pickleball courts at Westmoreland Park because the constant loud noise disrupts nearby homes on a daily basis. Although HWS Law Group sent a cease and desist letter on June 18 on behalf of five neighbors, over 500 people signed a petition to keep the courts open as city officials continue evaluating soundproofing options — including a planned facility at Lane Community College next spring.  KLCC

CRIME NEWS

  • A 29-year-old Springfield man, Justin Carr, was arrested in Washington for his role in a mobile home fire at Santiago Mobile Home Park on July 9 that killed an 85-year-old homeowner and her 64-year-old son—he faces charges of two counts of murder, one count of first-degree arson, and one count of unlawful manufacture of a destruction device.  KEZI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Val Hoyle said a new bill signed last week cuts Medicaid coverage by adding extra work rules and paperwork that will cost Oregon $100 million to implement. She warned the changes could force rural hospitals to close—leaving many residents without needed healthcare and slowing the state’s fight against climate change.  KLCC
