Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 19th of July.
Good morning, Eugene.
On July 17, police arrested 19-year-old Springfield man Jairmee Allen Cates for a November 26 shooting near West 13th Avenue + Lawrence Street in Eugene where he reportedly threatened three people with a high-powered rifle, punched one man, and is linked to an incident that wounded a 19-year-old man and struck three parked vehicles, and he now faces charges of menacing + unlawful use of a weapon as his case goes to the District Attorney.
University of Oregon’s Ballmer Institute—spearheading a new undergraduate program in child behavioral health— trains students with over 700 hours of community field work so they can work in mental health care without a costly graduate degree.
About 20 students enrolled since 2022 will walk the stage in summer 2026 and help meet the growing need for mental health services.
On July 18th, the House passed the $9 billion Rescissions Act that defunded $1.1 billion from PBS and NPR, and KLCC in Eugene will lose about $300,000—funding that has helped keep rural towns like Florence, Riddle, Cottage Grove and Oakridge informed.
KLCC plans to work hard to maintain its news coverage in these areas despite the cuts.
Starting next year, the Oregon State Marine Board will require permits for kayaks, rafts and stand-up paddleboards as well as for boats 10 feet or longer to help fund boat stations and control invasive species.
A 7-day permit will cost between $5 and $6 while annual and bi-annual permits cost up to $20 and $35 respectively (permits are not required for inner tubes or children under 14).
The City of Eugene is now accepting online applications for exemptions from local system development charges to support affordable housing projects; proposals must meet affordability guidelines and be ready to start construction within 18 months with applications due by September 10. Approximately $284,954 in funding will be awarded through a competitive request for proposals—half for rental developments and half for home ownership projects.
