- ➤ Staff at Beyond Toxics unionized by forming Resilient Organizers Opposing Toxics—eight employees are now represented by the Communications Workers of America after the Board approved their request in May. The move followed longtime Executive Director Lisa Arkin's retirement in June, and new Executive Director Jen Davis said she supports working with the union to strengthen decision-making. KLCC

- ➤ On Tuesday afternoon, the Eugene Police Department arrested 47-year-old Hans Matheus, a Fresno man wanted on an extraditable warrant for burglary, at Elmer’s Restaurant at Valley River Way after license plate reader cameras helped locate him—he was taken into custody without incident and transported to Lane County Jail. - ➤ Lane County and its volunteer Lane County Sheriff Mounted Posse were sued in federal court on July 22 for alleged racial profiling, assault, and civil rights violations after Keviantae Hill—a 20-year-old visiting the 2023 county fair—was mistaken for a shooting suspect and chased in a golf cart until he collapsed from an asthma attack (the lawsuit names additional defendants) (the mounted posse will continue to provide parking support at the fair this week). - ➤ Today, Willamalane’s Concerts in the Park starts at Island Park, 200 West B Street with The Koz performing rock from the ’70s through the ’90s; gates and concessions open at 5:30 p.m. and concerts begin at 6 p.m. Future shows on July 30 and 31 will feature different bands and require a $3 admission or a non-perishable food donation—visitors are advised to check Willamalane’s website for travel updates due to nearby street closures. - ➤ The Lane County Fair opened July 23 with new attractions such as roaming kids’ acts and the iFlip trampoline stunt show—country star Craig Morgan performed on opening night. Today the fair features a Chingy concert at 7:30 p.m. and will host performances by Lupe Fiasco, Chase Rice and Smash Mouth later this week—security requires passing metal detectors and using clear bags. - ➤ Oregon higher education leaders and workforce advocates said Workforce Pell will use federal aid to help low-income students pay for short-term job training aimed at high-paying careers. Officials said the Department of Education must post final rules by Nov. 1 — a process expected to lead to awards by the 2026-27 school year — as the program works to ease Oregon's job shortage. KLCC

- ➤ KLCC general manager Jim Rondeau said that Congress rescinded CPB funding, cutting an expected $350K for 2026 and forcing the station to tighten its budget. Tina Kotek announced on Tuesday that she delayed nearly 500 ODOT layoffs for 45 days to keep 12 maintenance facilities operating while lawmakers will meet in a special session in late August to address a $354 million funding gap—her statement hinted at a gas tax hike of at least 6 cents and adjustments to transit and freight charges.
