CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Travis Lynn Nyman, 32, of Eugene, was arrested in Oakridge on August 7 after he fled a June 23 hit-and-run near Blue River Dam—he now faces charges of Assault in the 2nd Degree and Menacing. NBC 16
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Aubrey Mountain Fire burned 25 acres east of Oakridge, causing closures on Highway 58 and Level 3 evacuation orders for Dunning and Roberts Ranch Roads. Fire crews used drones, aircraft, and hand crews to battle the blaze — officials had planned to reassess conditions on Friday morning. NBC 16
- ➤ Oregon State University Extension is seeking volunteers to collect Oregon ash seeds as scientists work to protect native ash trees from the invasive Emerald Ash Borer. A Zoom workshop on August 14 from noon to 1:00 p.m. will show volunteers how to gather and prepare the seeds for research + help preserve the trees. KLCC
- ➤ A wildfire was reported east of Oakridge on Thursday, August 7th at 3:55 p.m. and firefighters dropped 9,000 gallons of fire retardant after a Level 3 evacuation order was issued for the Roberts Ranch Road (and Dunning Road) area while Highway 58 was closed from Mile Post 36 to 62; by Friday morning (August 8th) the fire had grown to 30 acres and moved north. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The US District Court in Eugene dismissed a lawsuit filed by Cascadia Wildlands and other groups that alleged EWEB violated the Endangered Species Act by not providing enough fish passage for chinook salmon and bull trout at the McKenzie River Trail Bridge Dam (dismissed with prejudice). EWEB said it is now working to install a permanent fish passage at the dam (a measure to improve fish migration). KVAL
- ➤ Highway 58 reopened to traffic between Oakridge and the Willamette Pass after a wildfire closed the road on Thursday evening—ODOT said flaggers and pilot cars are guiding traffic in one lane between mileposts 37 and 38. Motorists should watch for workers and fire equipment along the roadway. KEZI
