  • The NorthWest Dog Project will host its third annual Market for Mutts on Saturday, August 23, at Viking Brewing from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The event features vintage vendors, a dog photo booth, flash tattoos, live music, and food and drinks — proceeds will help rescue dogs facing euthanasia.  NBC 16

  • A Eugene man, 66-year-old Gregory Dale Gipson, died after his kayak capsized on the McKenzie River near Deerborn Island Road on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.—Lane County Sheriff's Office said fire personnel rescued another individual—authorities are reviewing the incident.  KVAL
  • A wildfire southeast of Eugene has prompted a Level 2 evacuation today for residents in Hideaway Hills and east of Skyhawk Way from Hampton Road to Dillard Road—public safety officials advise immediate departure, careful driving with headlights on, and strict adherence to directions until the area is declared safe.  KEZI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A federal judge blocked funding cuts to DEI programs in Eugene School District 4J after the district joined a lawsuit challenging federal directives — the ruling protects inclusive education and millions in federal aid. This decision sets a national precedent and lets educators continue supporting diversity in the classroom.  KEZI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Travelers in Eugene face delays on High Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues as the city expands the wastewater system to support downtown riverfront development—construction is scheduled to finish on August 29. Drivers must use Eighth or Broadway to access Sixth Avenue while the closed Sixth Avenue intersection and Coburg off-ramp affect traffic.  NBC 16

  • South Eugene's Cascade Manor broke ground on a $35 million expansion project that will add 25 new apartments and one four-plex for seniors. The 60,000 square foot development—set to finish construction in 2027—offers new amenities and already has a waitlist for more than 200 residents.  KLCC
