Oregon men's basketball opens the Tony Stubblefield era against Montana tonight

If you're a Ducks hoops fan, tonight is your first look at life after Dana Altman. His surprise retirement means Oregon tips off against Montana without him leading the team out for the first time in nearly two decades, and Tony Stubblefield takes over.

Autzen Zoo predicts a starting five of Tyrone Riley IV, Jasper Johnson, Andrew Meadow, Dwayne Aristode and Sean Stewart. Stewart, one of the few returners, says he got the new group hanging out off the court.

Rolling lane closures start on River Road today while crews apply new striping

If you drive River Road this week, expect rolling lane closures while crews apply striping. The closures move as the work progresses, and the City of Eugene says one travel lane will remain open. No detours are needed for cars, walkers or bikers.

River Road lane closures may run Monday through Thursday

November 2026

  • Possible rolling lane closures

Closures pause 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.

  • Where: Irving/Hunsaker to Beltline
  • When: starting Mon., Nov. 2, possibly through Thu., Nov. 5
  • No closures: 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.

Striping has to happen in daylight because the material needs a minimum temperature of 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The work finishes a street project that upgraded ADA-accessible curb ramps, improved bus stops and installed upgraded lighting.

Burn Season

Yard debris burning is now banned in Eugene, Springfield and Oakridge until spring

If you burn your fall yard debris, that season is over. Burning ended at 5 p.m. Sat., Oct. 31 in Eugene, Springfield, Oakridge and their urban growth boundaries, and it's banned for everyone there until spring burning opens for qualified residents in March.

Burning is banned in three areas and still an option elsewhere in Lane County

  • Info: -or.gov or 541-736-1056
  • Alternatives: mulching, composting or chipping
  • Year-round drop-off: Lane Forest Products, Rexius, Lane County transfer stations

Outside the ban areas, check with LRAPA before lighting yard debris fires. The rules follow the seasonal shift toward frequent inversions, which can trap air pollutants and worsen air quality over the coming months.

$50 to $2,500fine range for burning after the season closes, or more

Violations after the close of outdoor burning season can bring fines in that range or higher.

Drain's Pass Creek Covered Bridge is now on the National Register of Historic Places

If you like old covered bridges, Drain has a new landmark. The National Park Service accepted the nomination in October for its statewide significance in engineering. The bridge dates to 1925, though the Oregon Historical Society says it may have been built in 1906. If so, it's the oldest still-standing covered bridge in Oregon.
