If you're on campus, here's what's proposed. UO's preliminary plan would end more than 15 graduate programs, cut more than 100 administrative and staff positions, and merge the College of Design with the School of Music and Dance. The goal is to close a projected $63.3 million deficit.

President Karl Scholz said "we will not be implementing these budget cuts across the board." KEZI reports that some of those positions are vacant, so around 60 employees would be laid off.

Schools and colleges$25.8 million40.8%
Administrative units$17.6 million27.8%
Enterprise level$16 million25.3%
Prior deficit reductions$3.9 million6.2%
  • Tenure-track faculty layoffs: none in the plan
  • Tenured faculty signed up to retire within two years: 61
  • College of Arts and Sciences graduate program reductions: up to 40%
  • Students in programs proposed for cuts can finish their degrees

Part of the hole comes from fewer nonresident students. UO enrolled about 2,400 nonresident first-year students a year for a decade and expects fewer than 1,900 this year. "We are assuming that this lower level of non-resident students is our new normal," Chief Financial Officer Jamie Moffitt said. Feedback is open until late November.
